Restorative Fillings

The most common treatment for a cavity is a dental filling. This treatment involves your dentist removing tooth decay from your tooth and filling the hole with dental material used to fill cavities.

There are two main types of materials used for direct fillings: Dental Amalgam (silver) and Composite Resin (tooth coloured). Each type of filling has its advantages and disadvantages that your dentist can discuss with you.

Preventative Dentistry

Dental Exam

The dental exam is critical to your ongoing oral health. It consists, in part, of the dentist looking inside your mouth for things that can affect your oral – and your overall – health. The dental exam can catch problems early before you see or feel them and when they are much easier and less expensive to treat.

Preventive Dental Hygiene

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common dental problems adults face, yet it can begin at any age. It is often painless and happens slowly. Sometimes you may not notice any signs until the disease is serious and you are in danger of losing your teeth. The good news is that gum disease can be prevented with good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist.

Crowns

A crown, also called a cap, is a hollow, artificial tooth used to cover a damaged or decayed tooth. The crown restores the tooth and protects it from further damage. Crowns can also be used to cover a discoloured or misshapen tooth. A tooth fixed with a crown looks and works very much like a natural tooth.

If your tooth is damaged but not lost, a crown can be used to restore its shape, appearance and function. You may need a crown if you have a root canal, a large filling in a tooth, or a broken tooth.

Crowns are strong and generally last for about 10 years or longer if you take good care of them. Brush and floss your crown just like you clean your natural teeth. Crowns may not be as strong as your natural teeth so try not to bite hard objects or use your teeth to open or cut things.

Bridges

A bridge is a dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. It is typically made up of an artificial tooth fused between 2 crowns a hollow, artificial tooth that fits over a natural tooth. The bridge is held firmly in place by natural teeth on each side of the missing one(s).

Dentures

Dentures are artificial replacements for your natural teeth and gums. If an accident, disease or poor oral health care has left you with only a few healthy teeth or none at all, your dentist might suggest dentures to replace your missing teeth.

There are 2 types of dentures: partial and complete. For both types, your dentist makes a model of your teeth by taking impressions. The models are used to custom-fabricate your dentures.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is the process of removing infected, injured or dead pulp from your tooth. The space inside the hard layers of each tooth is called the root canal system. This system is filled with soft dental pulp made up of nerves and blood vessels that help your tooth grow and develop. When the nerve of your tooth becomes infected, a successful root canal treatment lets you keep the tooth rather than having to extract it. Keeping your tooth helps to prevent your other teeth from drifting out of line and causing jaw problems and avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth.

Dental Implants

If one or more of your teeth are missing, there are a number of ways to replace them. An alternative to bridges, partials or complete dentures may be dental implants. Implants are used to replace missing roots and support artificial replacement teeth. They are comfortable and look like natural teeth.

A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.

Extractions

An extraction means to have a tooth removed, usually because of disease, trauma or crowding.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance (though not necessarily the functionality) of teeth, gums and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improvement in dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance.

Tooth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a relatively simple process. Whitening products contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These tooth whitening solutions break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the color less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

At-Home Tooth Whitening

Your dentist will provide you with a custom-made tray. The dentist will give you instructions on how to place the tooth whitening solution in the tray and for what length of time.

Out-of-office tooth whitening can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Digital X-rays

Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool to help your dentist detect damage and disease not visible during a regular dental exam.

Benefits of Digital X-Rays:

• The film is immediately processed and available to view.
• Less radiation needed to produce the same quality image as film (digital X-rays gives 70% less exposure to radiation than conventional X-rays).
• You can enhance the digital image (such as alter brightness and contrast) with a series of processing techniques
• Digital radiography produces larger photos to better source hard-to-see cavities
